Gabe Jacas, a Port St. Lucie, Florida native, was a three-star recruit and state champion wrestler who chose Illinois over Power-4 offers from Mississippi State, Tennessee, and others. His wrestling background gave him elite grip strength and body control, traits that showed up immediately upon arrival in Champaign. As a true freshman in 2022, he became the first Illini true freshman ever named FWAA Freshman All-American, racked up 4.0 sacks, led all freshmen nationally in QB hits (13 per PFF), and finished second in school history for freshman sacks behind only Simeon Rice.
